Six year old Grace Elizabeth Madison Thornton can barely contain her excitement, as this Christmas Eve promises to be the biggest night of her life. Elizabeth is finally old enough to dress up in a white robe made from one of her mama's bed sheets, don wings fashioned from tinfoil and take her place in the Methodist church sanctuary as an angel in her small Southern town's annual Christmas Eve nativity pageant.

But just seconds before the performance begins, Elizabeth is banned from participating by the over zealous pageant director, who deems the child too little to hold a lighted candle. Instead of going to sit with her mama and daddy in the audience, Elizabeth finds herself in the church's outdoor nativity display where she enters a surreal world that includes plywood figures that talk, an unusual angel and a startling encounter with the Baby Jesus!
